There is a case — argued quietly but persistently by those who know computing's history — that Dennis MacAlistair Ritchie did more to shape the modern world than almost any other individual of the twentieth century. He did not become a household name, and he preferred it that way. But the two things he created in a Bell Labs corridor in the late 1960s and early 1970s — the Unix operating system and the C programming language — form the invisible bedrock on which virtually all of modern software is built.
Ritchie was born in Bronxville, New York on September 9, 1941, the son of Alistair Ritchie, a Bell Labs engineer who worked on switching systems. The family connection would prove fateful. After graduating summa cum laude from Harvard in 1963 with degrees in physics and applied mathematics, Ritchie joined Bell Labs in Murray Hill, New Jersey — and he would spend his entire career there. It was a world of extraordinary intellectual freedom, where researchers were given space to follow curiosity wherever it led without the pressure of quarterly earnings.
In the late 1960s, Bell Labs had withdrawn from the troubled Multics operating system project — a massive collaborative effort that had grown too complex to succeed. Ritchie, working with Ken Thompson, Brian Kernighan, and a small team, decided to build something better: a smaller, cleaner, more practical operating system. Working initially on a discarded DEC PDP-7 that had been left in a corner, they created Unix. It was lean, elegant, and built on a philosophy of small programs that did one thing well and could be combined through pipes and redirection. Where Multics had been a cathedral, Unix was a Swiss army knife.
Unix needed a language. The assembly language they had been using was too low-level and too machine-specific — every time the hardware changed, they would have to rewrite the operating system from scratch. Ritchie had worked on an earlier language called B, itself derived from BCPL, but it lacked crucial features. Between 1969 and 1973, he created C: a language that sat in a sweet spot no language had occupied before — high enough level to be human-readable and portable across different machines, but low enough to give programmers direct access to hardware, memory, and performance.
In 1973, Ritchie rewrote the Unix kernel in C — an act of extraordinary confidence in the new language. For the first time in history, a major operating system was written in a high-level language rather than assembly. This meant Unix could be ported to different machines with minimal effort. C and Unix spread together, each making the other more valuable. When AT&T began licensing Unix to universities in the mid-1970s, generations of students learned C, and C became the native tongue of systems programming worldwide.

The ripples from Ritchie's work spread in every direction. The C language directly inspired C++, Java, C#, JavaScript, PHP, Python, and dozens of other languages. The Unix philosophy of modular, composable tools influenced every major operating system that followed, including Linux, macOS (whose core is BSD Unix), and Android. The "K&R" book — "The C Programming Language," co-authored with Brian Kernighan in 1978 — became one of the best-selling computer science texts ever published and is still in print. Ritchie received the Turing Award in 1983, sharing it with Ken Thompson.
Ritchie died on October 12, 2011 — just a week after Steve Jobs, whose death drew global mourning. Ritchie's passing was noted quietly in the technical press. Jobs had built beautiful products on top of the foundations Ritchie laid; the foundations themselves are less visible, but no less essential. Rob Pike, a longtime colleague at Bell Labs, wrote: "The tools Dennis built — and their direct descendants — run pretty much everything today." That was an understatement. They run everything.
