Sho Yano was born on October 22, 1990, in Portland, Oregon, to Korean immigrant parents. His father, Katsura Yano, was a Korean-Japanese musician; his mother, Kyung Yano, was a former dancer who had become an aerospace engineer. The family was extraordinarily musical, and Sho's earliest documented gifts were musical — he was composing classical pieces at four, performing them at five, recording them at six.
His intelligence quotient was tested in early childhood and reported above 200. The figure, on the standard tests available at the time, was at the absolute ceiling — the same ceiling that the most famous historical IQ scores have hovered around. Sho, by every formal measurement and informal observation, was off-the-chart cognitively.
He completed his secondary-school equivalency at nine. He matriculated at Loyola University Chicago at age nine, completing a bachelor's degree in biology summa cum laude at twelve. He then enrolled in the University of Chicago's combined MD-PhD programme — the most demanding clinical-research training pathway American medicine offers, normally completed in eight years by adults.
