Searching for the smartest people alive is a reasonable way to look for intellectual inspiration. It becomes misleading when a page turns scattered score claims, estimates and biographies into a single leaderboard. In particular, a list of living people must not include historical figures, and it should never present an unverified score as a fact.

Our approach is deliberately narrower and more useful. We look for enduring, publicly verifiable achievement in a field where expert peers can evaluate it. The people below are examples, not a universal ranking and not an exhaustive list of every brilliant person alive.

Why a “smartest person alive” ranking breaks down

IQ is a standardized score, not a universal unit of human worth or achievement. The American Psychological Association describes IQ as a score based on psychological tests; modern scores are deviations from a particular test’s norm group. Test editions, norms, conditions and the parts of cognition measured all matter. A number quoted without the test, date, norm and qualified administration is not enough to compare people responsibly.

There is also no shared contest in which every living mathematician, scientist, artist, engineer, entrepreneur and strategist takes the same assessment. Even where a valid score exists, it does not tell us who has made the strongest contribution to number theory, protein science, software design, music or public problem-solving.

That is why this page does not use estimated IQs, viral “record” claims, childhood anecdotes or anonymous lists to crown a winner. It also does not use categories such as nationality, race or gender as proxies for intellectual ability.
