Shakuntala Devi was born on 4 November 1929 in Bangalore, into a family that lived by performance rather than by books. Her father, C. V. Sundararaja Rao, had run away from a strict Brahmin household to join a circus, where he worked as a trapeze artist, lion tamer and magician. When Shakuntala was about three, he was teaching her a card trick and noticed that she was not memorizing the cards by their faces — she was tracking them by number, and she never lost count. He tested her further. The child could already manipulate figures faster than he could deal.
There was no money for school, and her father saw no reason to find any. Instead he built an act around her. By the age of six she was demonstrating her arithmetic before audiences at the University of Mysore; soon she was touring India, then the world, a small girl on a stage answering questions hurled at her by professors who came expecting a trick and left unable to explain one. She received no formal education of any kind. Everything she knew about numbers, she had taught herself by living inside them.
What set Devi apart from a stage memorist was that her ability was genuinely computational. She extracted roots, found cube roots of huge numbers, identified the day of the week for any date across centuries, and multiplied vast figures — all without paper, and usually faster than the question could be fully written down. In 1977, at Southern Methodist University in Texas, she calculated the 23rd root of a 201-digit number; the answer was later checked against a Univac computer, which had to be specially programmed for the task. She matched it.
Psychologists wanted to know how. In 1988 the Berkeley researcher Arthur Jensen studied her under controlled conditions and published his findings in the journal Intelligence. He confirmed her speed was real and not rehearsed, but found, strikingly, that her scores on standard memory tests were unremarkable. Her gift was not a freakish memory. It was an intimacy with number relationships so deep that calculation felt to her like recognition. "Numbers have life," she liked to say. "They're not just symbols on paper."
Devi refused to be treated as a curiosity. She insisted that her ability was a skill, not a miracle, and that ordinary children could be taught to love mathematics if adults stopped presenting it as something to fear. She wrote a string of books toward that end — Figuring: The Joy of Numbers, Puzzles to Puzzle You, Mathability — plain, encouraging texts that tried to hand her pleasure in numbers to readers who had been taught to dread them.
She was also, quietly, a pioneer far outside mathematics. In 1977 she published The World of Homosexuals, widely regarded as the first serious study of homosexuality in India. The book was sympathetic, calm and decades ahead of its country's public conversation; Devi later said she had been moved to write it after her own marriage to a man who was gay. That she could be, in the same life, a circus child, a Guinness record holder, an astrologer, a novelist and a social reformer says something about how little she accepted other people's categories.
She ran for the Lok Sabha in 1980, wrote cookbooks and crime novels, practised astrology, and kept performing into old age. The arithmetic never left her. Audiences in the 1990s found the same instant, unhesitating answers she had given as a six-year-old in Mysore. She had simply done it longer than anyone else alive.
Shakuntala Devi died in Bangalore on 21 April 2013, aged 83. On what would have been her 84th birthday, Google honoured her with a Doodle rendered in calculator-style digits. In 2020 a feature film carried her story to a new generation. But her own preferred monument was simpler and more useful: a generation of readers who, because of her books, stopped being afraid of a column of figures.

Shakuntala Devi proved that extraordinary mathematical ability does not require formal training, institutional credentials, or even literacy in the conventional sense. A circus child with no schooling outpaced the computers of her era, and in doing so she forced psychologists to study a kind of intelligence their tests were not built to measure.
Her deeper legacy is pedagogical. She refused to let her gift be filed away as a freak show and spent decades arguing that fear of mathematics is taught, not innate. Through her books she tried to give ordinary readers a share of her pleasure in numbers — an act of generosity that outlasts even her records.
