Song Yoo-geun was born on November 27, 1997, in South Korea. His gifts surfaced extraordinarily early. He attended a school for prodigies but left it in 2003, and roughly six months of independent study afterward were enough for him to work through pre-calculus problems while still of an age when most children are learning basic arithmetic. In August 2004, before he was seven, he passed a national craftsman certification examination in information technology.

In October 2005 he applied to Inha University through an early-decision pathway designed to let exceptional students bypass the standard national college entrance examination. He was accepted at the age of seven, becoming the youngest university student the country had ever admitted. At his interview he reportedly demonstrated a grasp of the Schrodinger equation, signaling that his interest was not arithmetic precocity alone but theoretical physics.

Inha University recognized that a seven-year-old could not simply be dropped into lecture halls full of adults, and built an unusual structure around him. It convened a committee, sometimes described as the Song Yoo-geun Committee, made up of professors and his mother, who arranged private lessons in place of conventional classroom instruction. The university also provided him with his own laboratory and a residence so that he could remain with his parents while he studied.

His ambitions pointed toward the deep questions of the physical universe. He moved on to graduate study at the University of Science and Technology, beginning as a master's student around February 2009 with the intention of studying astronomy, and the following year the institution announced he had been accepted into a combined master's and doctoral program, with the stated goal of his obtaining a PhD as a teenager.

That path did not run smoothly. A paper he co-authored was retracted amid concerns that it had drawn too heavily, without proper attribution, on a previously published book chapter, an episode that drew critical attention in the Korean press and raised hard questions about the pressures placed on a child operating in an adult research environment.

Song's later years became, in part, a public reconsideration of the prodigy-acceleration model itself. Rather than continuing on the compressed track to a doctorate, he ultimately stepped back and pursued a more conventional educational route through standard examinations and degree programs, a decision widely discussed in Korea as a young man reclaiming a more ordinary pace for his own life and learning.

His story occupies a particular and important place in the literature on prodigies. South Korea invested enormous public attention and institutional effort in accelerating one gifted child as far and as fast as possible, and the outcome was neither a simple triumph nor a simple failure. It was a complicated human life, which is itself the lesson many observers drew from it.

Song Yoo-geun represents the cautionary and humanizing side of the prodigy story. He showed, at seven, a genuine and rare aptitude for theoretical physics. But his trajectory also showed the cost of treating a child primarily as a record to be broken, and his eventual choice to slow down has been read by many as a quiet, mature correction, a reminder that a gifted childhood still has to be lived as a childhood.
