Tathagat Avatar Tulsi was born on 9 September 1987 in Patna, in the Indian state of Bihar. From very early on his progress through the education system was simply unlike anyone else's. He completed his high-school studies at the age of nine. He earned a BSc at eleven and an MSc — both in physics, from Patna Science College, part of Patna University — at twelve. The Guinness Book of World Records recognised him as the 'Youngest Masters Graduate.'

The Indian press could not get enough of him. The Times called him a 'Physics Prodigy'; The Week dubbed him a 'Master Mind'; Outlook listed him among the smartest young Indians; TIME magazine featured him as one of Asia's most gifted youngsters. In 2001 the Indian government's Department of Science and Technology shortlisted him to attend a Nobel laureates' meeting in Germany. He carried, at fourteen, a weight of expectation that would have crushed most adults.

Crucially, Tulsi was not merely fast — he wanted to do real physics. He was admitted to the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bangalore for doctoral work, and chose a serious and demanding subject: quantum computing. His PhD thesis was titled 'Generalizations of the Quantum Search Algorithm.' He co-authored a research manuscript, 'A New Algorithm for Fixed-point Quantum Search,' with Lov Grover — the Bell Labs physicist whose Grover's algorithm is one of the foundational results of quantum computing. To work alongside Grover on his own algorithm was no small thing.

He completed his PhD around the age of twenty-one, and in 2010, at twenty-two, was appointed an assistant professor at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay — making him, at the time, the youngest professor in the IIT system. The prodigy narrative seemed to have landed exactly where it was supposed to: a brilliant child had become a working scientist at one of the country's most prestigious institutions.

Then the story turned, in a way that prodigy stories rarely admit to in public. Tulsi's health deteriorated. He was, by various accounts, absent from IIT Bombay for an extended period — reportedly close to four years — as he struggled with illness, and in time the institute terminated his appointment for that absence. The youngest IIT professor had lost the post that had crowned his childhood fame.

His later years have been difficult and widely reported in the Indian media as a cautionary tale: a genius who completed a PhD at twenty-one and was an IIT professor at twenty-two, and then, for a long stretch, could not find an academic job. The coverage was sometimes harsh, treating him almost as a fallen wonder. But it also raised harder questions about how India's institutions support — or fail to support — the prodigies it celebrates so loudly.

In January 2025, after years out of the academic mainstream, Tulsi joined Ganga Devi Women's College in Patna as an assistant professor — a return to teaching, in his home city, far from the spotlight of his youth. It was not the trajectory the headlines of 2000 had predicted, but it was a working life in physics, on his own terms.

Tathagat Avatar Tulsi's story resists the neat shape that prodigy stories are usually forced into. He genuinely did the things attributed to him — the degrees, the Guinness record, the work with Grover, the IIT chair. He also genuinely struggled afterward, with health and with a system that did not seem built to hold someone who had arrived so early. Both halves are true, and together they make him one of the most honest and instructive cases of what acceleration can and cannot guarantee.
