Esther Okade was born in 2004 in Walsall, West Midlands, to Nigerian-British parents. Her father, Paul, an engineer, and her mother, Efe, a teacher, both held strong views about education and a clear-eyed sense of what was unusual about their daughter from infancy. Esther's twin brother, Iddrissou, was himself gifted; the family describes the pair as having pushed each other from the cradle.
By three, Esther was reading at the level of a child twice her age. By four, she was doing basic algebra. By six, she was sitting GCSE Mathematics as a private candidate — and passing it. By seven, she sat it again and improved her grade. The British educational system, which has no standard pathway for what to do with a primary-schooler who has passed a GCSE, struggled visibly. The family pulled her out of mainstream education and began home-schooling.
The Open University, which has historically been the only British institution to offer university-level coursework by correspondence, accepted her as an undergraduate at ten. Esther, in her CNN interview, was direct about her ambitions: a doctorate by thirteen, an academic career, and possibly a school of her own back in Nigeria for gifted children. Her mother, Efe, has written a book on home-schooling Esther — "The Maths Pioneer" — that has become a quietly influential text in the British home-education community. The book argues, with detailed case-study evidence, that the British educational system's failure to accelerate gifted children is structural rather than philosophical, and that intelligent home-schooling can fill the gap. The argument is controversial in mainstream British educational policy circles. The book has sold well anyway.
Esther, since 2015, has continued her mathematics studies. Her stated PhD-by-13 target has slipped — both she and her family have, in interview, noted that the British university doctoral system is not built to accommodate thirteen-year-olds, and that the goal was always more aspirational than absolute. She has, however, continued to study and progress at a pace that British educational gatekeepers continue to find difficult to handle. She is now, by 2026, twenty-two years old, and has reportedly entered postgraduate-level mathematical work. Her Nigerian-school project, last reported in 2022, was at the planning stages.
