Macaulay Carson Culkin was born on August 26, 1980, in the Manhattan borough of New York City. He was the third of seven children of Christopher Kit Culkin, a former stage actor, and Patricia Brentrup. The household was large, financially strained, and oriented, increasingly, around the children's auditions; several of Macaulay's siblings, including Kieran and Rory Culkin, would also become actors.

He started young. Culkin began performing at four, including a stage production at the New York Philharmonic, and worked steadily as a child actor through the late 1980s.
