Neelakantha Bhanu Prakash Jonnalagadda was born on 13 October 1999 in Hyderabad, to Jonnalagadda Srinivas and Hema Siva Parvati. His childhood turned on a single accident. In 2005, when he was five, he was riding on a cousin's scooter when it was struck by a truck. He hit his head on the road, fractured his skull, and spent the following year largely bedridden, needing some eighty-five stitches and multiple operations.
Confined and recovering, Bhanu was given puzzles and mental arithmetic to keep his mind active — a way, his family hoped, to make sure the injury had not dulled him. It did the opposite. The exercises meant to occupy a damaged child revealed an unusual one. He began to find calculation not difficult but thrilling, and the speed kept climbing. By the time he was a teenager he was beating electronic calculators in head-to-head races.
At fifteen he began breaking records held by established names in mental calculation, including the American 'Human Calculator' Scott Flansburg and, by reputation, Shakuntala Devi herself. The Limca Book of Records measured his processing speed at an average of around twelve operations per second — roughly ten times the pace of a typical brain working at arithmetic. He accumulated four world records and some fifty Limca Book entries.
He studied mathematics at St. Stephen's College, Delhi, taking a Bachelor of Science with honours, and it was during these years that his calculating sharpened to championship level. The 2020 Mind Sports Olympiad was, remarkably, his competitive debut at that event. He treated the win not as an endpoint but as a platform.
Bhanu has been blunt about why the speed matters to him, and it is not the records. "I don't want to be the world's fastest human calculator," he has said in interviews and TEDx talks. "I want to be the last." His point: in an age of ubiquitous calculators, the value of mental arithmetic is not the answer but the confidence and numerical intuition it builds — and that, he argues, is what mathematics education usually fails to deliver.
He founded an education company, first known as Exploring Infinities and later as Bhanzu, to turn that argument into a curriculum. The platform, built on years of research and hundreds of live stage shows performed around the world, aims directly at what Bhanu calls 'math phobia' — the learned dread that drives children away from the subject before they ever discover they might be good at it.
His personal story is central to that mission, and he tells it deliberately. A boy whose skull was fractured, who might have been written off, instead found in numbers both his recovery and his calling. He uses it to make a simple case to students: ability is far more trainable, and far less fixed, than they have been led to believe.
Bhanu continues to perform, teach and run Bhanzu, and to give TEDx talks with titles like 'Racing Against a Calculator' and 'Breaking the Mental Speed Barrier.' For a generation of Indian schoolchildren he has done what Shakuntala Devi did for an earlier one — made mathematics look not like a threat but like a sport you could actually want to play.

Bhanu's story rewrites the usual prodigy narrative. His ability did not arrive as a gift at birth; it emerged from a head injury and a year of recovery, built through deliberate practice. That makes him a powerful argument against the idea that mathematical talent is fixed and innate — and a model for what structured training can produce.
He matters most, though, as an educator. By branding mental calculation as a sport and attacking 'math phobia' head-on, he has reframed the subject for millions of students who had been taught to fear it. His goal of being 'the last' fastest calculator is really a goal of making numerical confidence ordinary.
