On a July morning in 1960, a twenty-six-year-old Englishwoman with no university degree crept through the forest on the shores of Lake Tanganyika in what is now Tanzania and watched a chimpanzee strip the leaves from a grass stem and use it as a tool to fish termites from a mound. Jane Goodall immediately recognised what she had seen: a behavior that, by the prevailing scientific consensus, only humans were capable of. She reported it to her mentor, the paleoanthropologist Louis Leakey, who wrote back: "Now we must redefine tool, redefine man, or accept chimpanzees as humans." That single observation cracked open one of the most fundamental boundaries science had drawn between our species and all others.

Valerie Jane Morris-Goodall was born on April 3, 1934, in Hampstead, London, to a racing driver father and a novelist mother. Her father gave her a lifelike stuffed chimpanzee named Jubilee as a baby gift, and her mother encouraged rather than discouraged her obsession with animals — including, famously, the hours the young Jane spent in a henhouse waiting to see how a chicken laid an egg. From childhood she wanted to go to Africa, drawn by Tarzan novels and a deep certainty that she belonged in the natural world rather than in the drawing rooms of postwar England.

She reached Africa through force of will and the patronage of Louis Leakey, then curator of the Coryndon Museum in Nairobi. In 1957 she traveled to Kenya to visit a school friend, found a job as Leakey's secretary, accompanied him on fossil-hunting expeditions to Olduvai Gorge, and convinced him that she was the right person to undertake a long-term behavioral study of wild chimpanzees at Gombe Stream on Lake Tanganyika. Leakey wanted someone without a formal scientific education — someone whose mind had not been shaped by existing assumptions about what animals could and could not do.

At Gombe she spent months being ignored and fled from by chimpanzees before a male she named David Greybeard began to tolerate her presence. That breakthrough led to more. Over the following years she documented behaviors that shattered the scientific consensus: tool use, tool manufacture, complex social hierarchies, political alliances, long-term memory, teaching, and — most disturbing of all — systematic warfare between chimpanzee communities. She also observed and documented infanticide and cannibalism, findings that troubled even her most sympathetic colleagues and that she reported with the same scrupulous honesty she brought to everything else she observed.

In 1965 she completed a PhD in ethology at Cambridge University — she remains one of a tiny number of people to have received a Cambridge doctorate without first completing an undergraduate degree. Her dissertation became the foundation for In the Shadow of Man (1971), a book that brought her research to a general audience and made her internationally famous. The Chimpanzees of Gombe (1986), a scientific synthesis of twenty-six years of data, remains one of the most comprehensive behavioral studies of any non-human animal ever published.

By the mid-1980s Goodall had witnessed the devastation of the forests surrounding Gombe. The chimpanzee population was shrinking. She attended a conference in Chicago in 1986 on chimpanzee conservation and arrived as a scientist; she left as an activist. She has spent more than three hundred days a year traveling since then — giving lectures, meeting world leaders, visiting schools — as the global ambassador for the Jane Goodall Institute, which she founded in 1977, and for Roots and Shoots, a youth environmental program operating in sixty-five countries. She has been awarded the Kyoto Prize, the Benjamin Franklin Medal in Life Science, the French Legion of Honor, and the Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire.

Why Jane Goodall Matters

Jane Goodall dismantled one of the most comfortable stories human beings had told themselves: that we are categorically different from other animals, separated by an unbridgeable gap of intelligence, culture, and moral complexity. Her chimpanzee research did not merely add to the scientific literature; it forced a philosophical reckoning with what it means to be human and, by extension, what ethical obligations we bear toward other species capable of suffering, joy, and social bonds.

She then did something rarer still: she converted the authority that scientific discovery granted her into decades of patient, optimistic advocacy, refusing despair even as the evidence for ecological collapse mounted around her. Her Roots and Shoots program has given hundreds of thousands of young people in sixty-five countries a framework for environmental action and the belief that individuals can change the world — because she herself is proof that they can.
