Emma Yang's grandmother lived in Hong Kong; Emma lived in New York. Across that distance, Alzheimer's disease was quietly erasing the people her grandmother loved. One year she forgot Emma's birthday, then her own son's. Emma, then a young teenager who had been writing code since she was six, did not accept that there was nothing to be done. She opened her laptop and began building an app that could do for her grandmother what the disease was undoing: put a name back to a face, a relationship back to a name. She called it Timeless, and she shipped it before she could legally drive.

Emma Yang was born around 2003 and grew up in New York City. She started programming at the age of six, which by her own account began almost as play and quickly became the way she thought about the world. By the time she reached middle school she was already a recognized young technologist, picking up awards and speaking invitations while most of her peers were still being introduced to their first lines of code.

The project that defined her grew out of grief and frustration rather than ambition. Her grandmother, who lived in Hong Kong while Emma was in New York, had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. The distance made it agonizing to stay connected, and the disease made even basic recognition fragile. When her grandmother forgot family birthdays and struggled to place the faces of her own relatives, Emma decided the problem was, at least in part, an engineering problem she could address.

She conceived Timeless, a mobile app aimed squarely at the daily experience of living with Alzheimer's. Its core feature, Identify, lets a patient point a phone camera at a person nearby; the app uses artificial-intelligence facial recognition to detect the face, match it, and display the person's name and their relationship to the patient. Other features help patients keep track of events, see who is around them, and contact loved ones with minimal friction.

Building it was not trivial. Emma taught herself the facial-recognition components, and the recognition technology was supported through the Kairos human-analytics platform. She designed the interface specifically for users who might be confused or anxious, stripping away complexity that an able-minded user would never notice but that could derail someone with cognitive decline. She began the work around the age of twelve and continued developing it through her early teens, with the app maturing as she did.

Recognition followed. She won the MIT Enterprise Forum's Dream It, Code It, Win It best biomimetic award, took a national grand prize at ProjectCSGIRLS, and was named among CE Week New York's young innovators to watch. Her work was covered by Fast Company, CBS News, the BBC, and others, and she was selected as one of the youngest solvers in the MIT Solve community.

She also became a public voice. She delivered a TEDx talk titled Changing the World with Code and spoke at Talks at Google, using those platforms to argue a simple, insistent point: that anyone, at any age, can build something that helps someone. She was not interested in being celebrated as a novelty. She wanted other young people, especially young women, to see software as a tool they were allowed to pick up and aim at problems that mattered to them personally.

Timeless is notable not just as a technical feat by a teenager but as a piece of deeply personal design. Emma did not pick a fashionable problem; she picked her own family's. The app's value proposition, restoring recognition and connection to people whose memory is failing, came from watching exactly that loss happen to someone she loved.

Emma Yang represents a distinctly modern kind of prodigy: the child who grows up fluent in code the way earlier generations grew up fluent in a second language, and who therefore experiences a family crisis not as something to be endured but as something to be built around. Her achievement reframes what a fourteen-year-old can responsibly take on, and it stands as one of the clearest recent examples of compassion and computer science meeting in the same young mind.
