Christopher Hirata was born on November 30, 1982, in Ypsilanti, Michigan, to Japanese-American parents. His father, an engineer; his mother, an educator. The family was, by every available description, methodical, supportive, and quietly committed to the kind of long-term educational investment that produces children who can sit IMO problems.
By fourteen, Christopher had been admitted to the California Institute of Technology as an undergraduate. He had, by then, won the IMO gold and qualified for the U.S. national mathematical-olympiad team. At Caltech, he completed his bachelor's degree in physics in three and a half years, graduating in 2001 at age eighteen.
His doctoral work, at Princeton under the supervision of David Spergel, was on cosmology — specifically, on the cosmic microwave background and the early universe. His PhD was conferred in 2005, at age twenty-two. He held postdoctoral fellowships at the Institute for Advanced Study and at Caltech. He joined the Ohio State University faculty in 2012, holding an endowed chair from 2015.
His scientific contributions have been substantial in the field of observational cosmology. He has been part of the team running the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope project. He has authored or co-authored hundreds of peer-reviewed papers. He has received the MacArthur Fellowship, the so-called "genius grant" — making him one of the relatively small number of former mathematical olympiad gold medallists to subsequently receive both a major scientific recognition and a major fellowship-foundation prize.
