Arnav Sharma was born in 2006 to Indian-British parents in Reading, Berkshire. His mother, Smita, worked as a software consultant; his father, Mohan, in finance. The family had moved from Delhi to Reading shortly before Arnav's birth. They were, by Reading-suburban standards, an ordinary middle-class household. Arnav attended a state primary school. He was, by his teachers' reports, bright but not conspicuously prodigious — bright in the way that many children of educated Indian-British families are bright. He read constantly. He liked mathematics. He spoke Hindi at home.
The incident that produced the test was a remark by a classroom teacher about Mensa being "too hard for you." Arnav, in the natural reaction of an eleven-year-old who has just been told he cannot do something, asked his mother to look into it. The supervised Cattell III B paper was booked within the week. Arnav, by his own account, did no preparation. He read the description of the test on the Mensa website. He showed up. He took the test.
He scored 162. The Mensa office, which is used to surprise high scores, was quietly impressed. The British press, which is much less used to processing the story of a verified Mensa-ceiling child whose family was completely unprepared for the result, ran articles within days. "Eleven-Year-Old Outscores Einstein on a Whim" was the New Scientist headline.
The classroom teacher's comment, which had triggered the entire sequence, was discussed in the resulting interviews. The teacher had not, by all accounts, meant the remark unkindly. He had not believed an eleven-year-old could pass an adult-graded IQ test. Mensa, after Arnav's score was verified, asked the family if they wished to make the test result the basis of a wider campaign about teacher expectations of South Asian-British children. The family politely declined. "He took the test. He scored. The teacher was wrong. That is the end of the story," Smita Sharma told The Times.
Arnav, since 2017, has progressed through Reading's selective secondary-school system. He has competed in the British Mathematical Olympiad. He has, according to his family, expressed interest in pursuing mathematics at university and possibly in research. He has avoided the celebrity trap that previous prodigy children of his cohort have fallen into. His family's approach, like the Sebastians' and the Hankins's, is to use the score as an access pass and otherwise put it away.
What Arnav Sharma's case demonstrates, more than any individual data point, is the unreliability of teacher judgement in identifying gifted minority-heritage children. The Equality and Human Rights Commission, in a 2020 review of the British educational system, used Arnav's case explicitly as an example of how children with verified extreme cognitive ability had been informally classified by their own teachers as ordinary. The implication for the children who have not had the temerity to ask for a Mensa test is the part of his story that British educational policy still has not fully addressed.

Arnav Sharma's case is the most explicit single example in the British record of teacher judgement failing to predict cognitive ability. The teacher who told him Mensa was "too hard" was not malicious; he was operating on the standard assumptions of his profession. Those assumptions, applied to South Asian-British and other minority-heritage children, have been documented for decades to produce systematic under-identification of gifted students.
Arnav, by sitting and passing the test on his own initiative, did something the British educational research community had been trying to provoke for years: he made the structural problem visible to the press. The Equality and Human Rights Commission cited his case in a 2020 review. Whether the school system has changed materially since is, by 2026, still an open question.
