Darwin's Galapagos Discoveries: What He Actually Found and Why It Mattered

The story of Darwin's Galapagos revelation has been mythologized into a simple narrative: young naturalist visits remote islands, observes finches with different beaks adapted to different foods, has eureka insight about natural selection. The Finches

Ornithologist John Gould examined Darwin's collection in 1837 and identified 13 distinct species, all clearly related but with very different beak shapes adapted to different food sources. Gould's analysis, not Darwin's field observations, was the key moment. Darwin had to ask the ship's surgeon for his better-labeled finch specimens to reconstruct island distributions.

The Road to Natural Selection

Darwin returned to London in October 1836. Over the next two years, as he processed his collections and read Malthus's Essay on Population (1838), the theory of natural selection crystallized. The Galapagos was one piece of evidence among many, not the sole source of inspiration.
