Nicolaus Copernicus: Biography, Discoveries & Legacy

Nicolaus Copernicus revolutionized our understanding of the cosmos by proposing the heliocentric model. Learn about his life, work, and lasting impact.

Nicolaus Copernicus (1473–1543) was a Polish mathematician and astronomer who formulated the heliocentric model of the solar system, placing the Sun rather than the Earth at the center. This Copernican Revolution fundamentally changed science and philosophy.

Born in Royal Prussia, Copernicus studied at the University of Kraków and later in Italy, where he was exposed to Renaissance humanism and the latest astronomical ideas. He eventually became a canon at Frombork Cathedral.

His masterwork, 'De revolutionibus orbium coelestium' (On the Revolutions of the Celestial Spheres), published in 1543 shortly before his death, laid the groundwork for the Scientific Revolution. Though the book was placed on the Church's Index of Forbidden Books, its ideas could not be suppressed.

Copernicus's heliocentric model directly inspired Galileo, Kepler, and ultimately Newton. His willingness to challenge 1,400 years of Ptolemaic orthodoxy with mathematical reasoning makes him one of the most important scientists in history.
