Paul Samuelson transformed economics from a discipline conducted in prose and intuition into one conducted in mathematics and formal models. When he submitted his doctoral dissertation at Harvard in 1941 — which would become Foundations of Economic Analysis (1947) — the committee reportedly remarked that it was so advanced they were not certain they were competent to evaluate it. He was twenty-five years old. The Foundations took the intuitions of Alfred Marshall, John Maynard Keynes, and Vilfredo Pareto and reformulated them in the language of constrained optimization and comparative statics — showing that apparently disparate economic theories shared a common mathematical structure. The effect was to establish the methodology that would define modern economics: formal theory expressed in equations, tested against data, and presented with the rigor of applied mathematics. No economist of the twentieth century was more responsible for the discipline's transformation into a quantitative science.
Paul Samuelson was born on May 15, 1915, in Gary, Indiana, the son of Jewish immigrants. He entered the University of Chicago at sixteen and later recalled the exact date he was "born as an economist": January 2, 1932, the day he first encountered the Malthusian doctrine of population in an economics lecture. He completed his undergraduate degree at Chicago and moved to Harvard for his graduate work, where he encountered the ideas of Keynes and absorbed the mathematical methods of the Viennese economist Gerhard Haberler. Harvard's economics department failed to offer him a position after his PhD — a decision widely attributed to anti-Semitism in the department — and he accepted a junior faculty position at MIT in 1940, which he would hold for the rest of his career. His presence transformed MIT's economics department from a minor program into one of the most influential institutions in world economics.
His most widely read work was not a research monograph but a textbook: Economics: An Introductory Analysis, first published in 1948 and subsequently revised through nineteen editions. It sold over four million copies in forty languages and introduced generations of students to both microeconomic and macroeconomic thinking within a single framework he called the neoclassical synthesis. The synthesis held that Keynesian demand management was appropriate at the macroeconomic level to maintain full employment, while classical price theory —supply and demand, markets clearing, rational actors —remained valid at the microeconomic level. This was not a compromise but a genuine theoretical integration: Samuelson showed that the two were consistent rather than contradictory, provided one recognized that Keynesian analysis operated at a different level of aggregation than classical microeconomics.

He formalized consumer theory through revealed preference —the idea that preferences can be inferred from choices rather than assumed. He proved the factor price equalization theorem in international trade, showing that free trade tends to equalize wages across countries. He developed the overlapping generations model in macroeconomics, which became foundational to the study of Social Security and pension systems. He contributed to welfare economics, public goods theory, portfolio selection, and the study of financial markets. With Robert Solow he collaborated on growth theory. His joint work with Solow and others established MIT as the intellectual heir to Cambridge Keynesianism, transplanting and mathematizing the ideas of Keynes for American academic economics. In 1970, at age fifty-five, he became the first American to receive the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences.

His Newsweek column, written from 1966 to 1981 in alternating weeks with Milton Friedman, was one of the great running debates in economics journalism: two men of comparable intellectual power, equally committed to rigorous argument, disagreeing on nearly everything about policy. Their exchanges —Samuelson defending an active government role, Friedman arguing for markets —educated the reading public about the real stakes in macroeconomic disagreement. Samuelson was an early and consistent advocate for using economic analysis to inform policy, advising presidents from Kennedy onward. He died on December 13, 2009, at his home in Belmont, Massachusetts, aged ninety-four. His nephew Lawrence Summers served as Secretary of the Treasury and President of Harvard; his student Robert Solow and his student's student Joseph Stiglitz each received their own Nobel Prizes. No single economist trained more Nobel laureates, or shaped more fundamentally the way economists think.
