Ludwig Mies van der Rohe was born in 1886 in Aachen, Germany, the son of a stonemason. He never attended architecture school. Instead he learned his trade as an apprentice in a furniture design workshop, then in the office of the furniture designer Bruno Paul in Berlin, and finally — most crucially — in the office of Peter Behrens, where he worked alongside both Le Corbusier and Walter Gropius in the most concentrated architectural talent pool of the early twentieth century. From Behrens he learned the discipline of industrial precision; from the German neoclassical tradition, filtered through his own emerging sensibility, he developed a devotion to quality of material, proportion, and detail that would become the philosophical and aesthetic center of his entire career.

His earliest independent work in the 1910s showed an architect already in possession of a powerful personal vision. His 1921 project for a glass skyscraper on the Friedrichstrasse in Berlin — unrealized — proposed an entirely transparent tower of free-form glass curtain wall, the interior structure expressed without disguise. It was fifty years ahead of its time. In 1929 he received the commission that established his international reputation: the German Pavilion for the Barcelona International Exposition. The pavilion had no program — it was not a museum, not an office, not a home. It was simply a statement of what architecture could be. A single open space organized by freestanding planes of marble, travertine, and glass, raised on a plinth above a reflecting pool, with two rectangular water features and a single bronze sculpture. The Barcelona Chair — also designed by Mies for the pavilion, for the King and Queen of Spain to sit on during the opening ceremony — became one of the most reproduced pieces of furniture in history.

The pavilion was demolished after the exposition. It was reconstructed on the same site in 1986 and is now permanently open to the public, visited by hundreds of thousands of people each year who travel to Barcelona specifically to stand in a room that is, structurally speaking, almost empty. The experience is one of the most refined in all of architecture: the proportions, the reflections in the water and the polished marble, the play of light, the quality of the materials — all calibrated to a pitch of perfection that makes the visitor intensely aware of the difference between a space that has been precisely thought through and one that has merely been built.

In 1930 he became the final director of the Bauhaus, taking over from Hannes Meyer and attempting to depoliticize an institution under increasing pressure from the Nazi government. He failed — the Bauhaus was forced to close in 1933 — and in 1938, after several years of fruitless attempts to work in Nazi Germany, he emigrated to the United States, accepting the directorship of the architecture school at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. The move transformed American architecture. His IIT campus, designed entirely according to his principles of structural clarity and material honesty — exposed steel frame, brick infill, large panes of glass — became the most copied campus in America. His teaching methodology, emphasizing absolute rigor in the study of structure and detail, shaped a generation of American architects.

The Farnsworth House in Plano, Illinois (1951) pushed his domestic architecture to its most radical extreme: a single-room glass pavilion raised on steel columns above a floodplain, with no interior walls except for a freestanding utility core. It was a house as philosophical argument — the minimum necessary to inhabit, surrounded by and interpenetrating with nature. Its client, Dr. Edith Farnsworth, sued him for cost overruns and later called the house "a glass cage." The argument between architect and client anticipated every subsequent debate about the relationship between architectural purity and human comfort.

The Seagram Building in New York (1958), designed with Philip Johnson, is widely considered the finest skyscraper ever built: a thirty-eight-story bronze-and-glass tower set back from Park Avenue on a granite plaza — a voluntary sacrifice of developable real estate to create a civic space, unprecedented in New York at the time. The building's structural steel is concealed behind bronze I-beams that serve no structural purpose but express, on the outside, the rhythm of the structure within. Every detail — the bronze mullions, the amber-tinted glass, the distance from the street, the plaza's fountains and benches — was subjected to the same standard of perfection that Mies had applied to the Barcelona Pavilion thirty years earlier. When the Seagram Building opened, every other developer in New York immediately began building inferior imitations of it. The corporate glass-and-steel box that came to define American cities in the 1960s and 1970s was Mies's language spoken without his discipline. It was, in a sense, the most backhanded tribute in architectural history.

Mies van der Rohe matters because he demonstrated that the pursuit of absolute architectural quality is not a luxury but a moral position. His buildings are the most imitated in the world — and most of those imitations are failures, because what is imitated is the surface (the glass, the steel, the minimalism) without the underlying discipline (the proportions, the material quality, the precision of detail) that gives the originals their power. The difference between the Seagram Building and the mediocre glass boxes that followed it is the difference between a philosophy rigorously applied and a style lazily borrowed.
