Erik D. Demaine was born on February 28, 1981, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, to Martin Demaine, a mathematician, sculptor, and glassblower, and Judy Anderson. His was not a household that separated art from science or learning from living. Identified as a child prodigy by the age of seven, Erik left the standard school system and was educated by his father as the two of them travelled across the continent together, an unconventional curriculum built around curiosity rather than grade levels.

That arrangement compressed his formal education dramatically. He entered university at twelve and completed his bachelor's degree at Dalhousie University in Canada by the age of fourteen. He then moved to the University of Waterloo for graduate study and finished his PhD by the time he was twenty, supervised by Anna Lubiw and Ian Munro, with a dissertation in the emerging area of computational origami.

The work that made his name began while he was still a teenage doctoral student. In a 1999 paper, the eighteen-year-old Demaine described an algorithm establishing that a single sheet of paper could, in principle, be folded into any conceivable three-dimensional shape, a result that helped found the modern mathematical study of folding. Origami, long treated as a craft, became under his hand a rigorous branch of geometry and computer science with implications for everything from manufacturing to biology.

In 2001 he joined MIT as a professor of computer science at twenty, the youngest in the institute's history, and was promoted to full professor in 2011. He became a member of the Theory of Computation group in MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, where his research ranged far beyond folding, into data structures, the geometry of protein folding, computational geometry, and the mathematics of why certain games and puzzles are hard.

Demaine never accepted the boundary between his mathematics and his father's art. The two have collaborated for Erik's entire life, and their mathematical origami sculptures were exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York as part of the Design and the Elastic Mind show, with work entering MoMA's permanent collection. He has spoken often about play as a serious method, treating puzzles and curiosity-driven exploration as legitimate engines of discovery rather than distractions from it.

In 2003 he received a MacArthur Fellowship, the so-called genius grant, with the foundation describing him as a computational geometer moving readily between the theoretical and the playful. In 2013 he was given the EATCS Presburger Award for young scientists, its citation listing contributions across the carpenter's rule problem, hinged dissections, prefix-sum data structures, the competitive analysis of binary search trees, graph minors, and computational origami.

His work has had concrete reach. The mathematics of folding that he helped formalize underlies self-folding robots, deployable structures, and approaches to understanding how proteins fold, problems where the abstract question of what shapes are reachable by folding becomes intensely practical. He has continued to publish prolifically and to teach, with his MIT lectures on geometric folding algorithms freely available and widely watched.

Erik Demaine represents the prodigy who not only accelerated through education at extraordinary speed but then sustained a major career for decades afterward, which is the rarer feat. He turned an unconventional childhood on the road into a permanent intellectual style, one in which folding paper and proving theorems are the same activity, and in doing so he helped create an entire mathematical field.
