Repairs to the Grade II listed Gauxholme viaduct at Todmorden on the Manchester to Blackburn line are set to start in October to secure the future of the George Stephenson-designed structure.

Grit blasting of the structure back to bare metal will allow structural repairs and waterproofing to be carried out on the viaduct, which was built in 1840, as part of a £3.7M investment by Network Rail under the Great North Rail Project.

Network Rail has described the viaduct that carries the railway over the Rochdale Canal as an important piece of railway heritage and said the work will restore it back to its Victorian splendour.
